Our arrival into Entebbe was quite uneventful. We found our shuttle driver outside the airport and made our way to Namirembe. On the way, our drive explained the increase in security for the African Union Summit. We saw three different types of patrols: white uniforms were traffic police, black uniforms were anti-terrorist ("searching for bombs"), and the fatigues w/ red berets were Army. These patrols were all up and down Entebbe road all the way from the airport into Kampala. Wilson came to the airport to greet us but after he did not see us for a while, he decided to go home. We were there at the time he was but we were not looking for him and he was not with our driver so he must have missed us in the crowd.
Wilson set up a time for us to meet the teachers today. However, since today is "wash day," he scheduled it after lunch at 2:00. We had the morning to burn, so after breakfast we decided to walk around the neighborhood. Not a half block down the road we came across a primary school with a great big field. Around the field were about 400 students broken up into five different teams. There was music playing so we decided to stop and watch for bit to see if we could figure out what was going on; so we stood and watched from the road. After a couple of minutes we noticed one of the security guards motioning to us to come down into the school complex. So we obliged and entered the gate. Again, just wanting to see what was going on, we stood by the gate just trying to take it all in. Then two older students who were dressed in special uniforms came over and asked us to follow them. We were then accompanied to the other side of the field where chairs had been set up for "guests." Not wanting to disappoint, we just went along and followed them, taking our seats on the other side. Then the event began. We heard the announcer welcome everyone to "sports day" at Mengo primary school. The student had been divided into five different teams and were going to compete in various events. We watched and cheered as these students competed in the 100m, 200m, and 400m races. They also had a "basket race" where students race with a basket on their heads. Another event was "bottle filling" where students had to fill a liter bottle from a bucket using only a spoon. The last event we watched was "skipping" where they did a 100m dash while jumping-rope all the way down. Now that was impressive:-) In all, we sat and watched for about an hour before excusing ourselves and took a back road out of the complex away from the field. We returned to the guest house and had lunch before Wilson picked us up in his new car at about 1:30. We went to the school and it is amazing! Pictures do it no justice. Everything looks great. It is hard to believe what that land looked like just 18 months ago. They had made signs for above each door that said "Welcome GAP Partners." In each room there is a sign above each blackboard that reads "God Bless GAP Partners." Each class recites that little prayer every morning before class starts.
After Wilson showed us all the buildings, we met with all of the teachers for almost two hours. We shared about who we are and they shared about themselves and how they were called to teach. They all took time to thank GAP for their contributions to the school. It was very moving to hear from their lips, in person, how much this school means to each of them. They absolutely love Wilson, love the wonderful buildings they now have, and love the children. Jim and Stuart were there. They lit up when we walked in the room and we all hugged. It was good seeing our friends again!
We talked about our backgrounds (mostly Trevor and Carrie). Carrie was very impressed with the teaching materials they had created for the walls and noticed there were many similarities in teaching material. Trevor discussed what he did and the teachers understood and began to talk about the various students they had that were "not getting it." On Monday they are going to create a list of these students by grade and age so Trevor knows who they are.
All of the students are coming to the school tomorrow afternoon to put on a show for us with dancing and singing. Wilson invited all of the parents to come as well so that they could meet us and so we could meet them. We are taking a box lunch from the guest house with us tomorrow and will go to Wilson's house after church for lunch. Julene arrives by plane tomorrow at 1:00. I will go with another man from the church to pick up Julene from the airport. The gathering at the school begins at 2:00. Tomorrow will be a full but fun day! After we met with the teachers, we went back to Wilson's house and gave them all of the gifts we had brought. Wilson let out his classic high-pitched "Ooooohhhh" when he saw the camera. He called in Rebecca and showed her and she practically jumped into his arms and gave him a hug. She immediately came around to each of us and gave us hugs. That was the most animated I have ever seen Rebecca! We stayed at Wilson's for about an hour and half just talking and going through gifts. It was a wonderful time just being with him and his family. We arrive backed at the guest house at 7:15 (dinner starts at 7:00 each night). |
